Programme outline:

DAY 1

Arrive to a warm welcome and settle in to your surroundings.

Acupuncture treatment (with or without needles)

Stroll through the formal Queens Gardens amongst the park’s Victorian and modern sculptures, which include the Puzzle, the Water Wheel, the Boer War memorial and Sentinel, a steel sculpture by Nelson artists Dominique de Borrekens and Grant Scott, installed in the pond and inspired by the base of a Nikau Palm frond.

The Priapos or ‘Cupid' Fountain and its pool were installed in 1895 in the area originally designated for a band rotunda that was never constructed. The fountain was made from an imported mould and consists of four gold lions' heads set on a rustic stone base, with the ‘upturned bowl' rim and naked cupid on top. When the fountain was originally made and installed, only three of the four lions' jaws spouted water. The fourth was never connected to the piping, and that idiosyncrasy remains.

Photo of Huangshi Chinese GardensIn the North East corner is the Huangshi Chinese Gardens, probably the finest of their ilk in New Zealand.

Huangshi Chinese Garden was opened in 2007 to celebrate a sister city link between Nelson and Huangshi in the province of Hubei, China.

Built on the eastern boundary of Queens Gardens, this enclosed Scholar’s Garden is based on ancient Chinese garden design principles developed as far back as 2000 years ago. Important aesthetic, historic and spiritual aspects are considered in a garden that aims to replicate nature.

The Garden features a walled, intimate space with windows in the wall filled with latticework patterns of camellias, peonies and butterflies. The walls are plastered, whitewashed and capped with traditional clay tiles brought in from China.

Water in a Chinese garden represents the ongoing fluidity of life, it should ‘flow freely as though it has no end’ and the garden pond in the Huangshi Garden flows from a waterfall into the pond around a concealed bend and out into the Queens Garden Pond.

A Chinese pavilion, or xie with its distinctive upturned tile roof (imported directly from Hubei Province) is the focal point of the garden. Weathered limestone rocks from Tarakohe in Golden Bay were used since that limestone closely resembles that found in traditional Chinese gardens and all of the garden details have been approved by experts in Nelson's sister city Huangshi.

The formal entrance is from Tasman Street.

Healing massage

Photo of fragrant candles Massage therapy encourages healing by promoting the flow of blood and lymph, relieving tension, stimulating nerves, and stretching and loosening muscles and connective tissue to keep them elastic.

Massage isn't capable of curing any serious or life-threatening medical disorders, but massage can provide welcome relief from the symptoms of anxiety, tension, depression, insomnia, and stress, as well as back pain, headache, muscle pain, and some forms of chronic pain.

Massage is also frequently recommended for the treatment of minor sports injuries and repetitive stress injuries, and for the enhancement of physical conditioning. Before physical exercise, massage helps get blood moving to assist in the warm-up. Massage after a workout has been shown to reduce the waste products (lactic and carbonic acid) that build up in muscles after exercise and cause cramping and discomfort.

There is also some scientific evidence to support claims that massage enhances the immune system and aids recovery from soft tissue injuries by increasing blood circulation to injured areas. Some studies indicate that massage can even reduce blood pressure. Some people find that massage relieves such digestive disorders as constipation.

Generally, massage is not advised for anyone with an infectious skin disease, a rash, or an unhealed wound. It's also wise to avoid massage immediately after surgery, or if you're prone to blood clots. Circulatory ailments such as phlebitis or varicose veins preclude the use of massage, and it should never be performed directly over bruises, inflamed or infected injuries, areas of bleeding or heavy tissue damage, or at the sites of recent fractures or sprains. Massage is not recommended for cancer patients immediately after chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Avoid massage over any known tumor, and in any area with a recent surgical incision.

Healing Massage is your first step to a healthier, more relaxed body, mind and spirit.

Sports and Shiatsu massage

close-up of essential oils container Our masseuses specialise in sports and shiatsu massage, employing soft strokes on the more delicate and bony structures of the body, such as the face, hands and feet, and stronger strokes over thickly muscled areas that retain stress, such as the neck and shoulders. The careful attention to the amount of pressure makes our massage great for relaxation.

Also available are Tibetan massage (a bit longer and more expensive sessions), reflexology and pregnancy massage.

Deep tissue massage

This massage involves slow strokes and deep finger pressure on areas of the body suffering from chronic muscle tension or areas that simply ache or feel contracted. Deep tissue massage is especially effective with tense areas such as stiff necks or sore shoulders.

Deep Muscle Therapy

This highly refined system and corrective treatment aids in the restoration of damaged muscles and soft tissues in the entire body. Using a specific series of cross-tissue movement, Deep Muscle Therapy concentrates on all layers of muscle that have become depleted of their normal blood lymphatic flow. This therapy is designed to cause corrective changes to the damaged or adherent muscles and the adjacent soft tissue, improve the circulation and speed up the natural healing process.
